I Need Some Kitchen Aid!

kitchenaid.jpg

It’s time that I own an electric stand mixer. All the cool kids (who bake) have them and shoot, I bake, and people tell me I’m cool. So it only follows that I should own a Kitchen Aid. Right?

The thing is, I seem to have gotten by fairly well without one for the past 18 years. That is to say, ever since I moved out of my parents’ house when I was seventeen, I’ve been mixing batter and dough with my $15 Sunbeam hand-held mixer, but just as often I use nothing more than a fork, or a wooden spoon and plenty of elbow grease. During this time, I’ve turned out several (hundred) dozen cookies, muffins, breads and cakes, most of them well above average, if I may be so bold. Oh yeah, and a couple (hundred) bowls of fresh whipped cream, always with success.

Why, then, am I struck with the sudden impetus to take up valuable counter space with this unwieldy appliance? Like I said. I bake. And I’m cool. And, most importantly, it’s going to be free. You see, I recently realized that I am able to cash in my Capital One No-Hassle mileage points for items other than airline miles. I can exchange points for GIFT CARDS from a wide array of restaurants and retailers: The Gap, Target, Sears, Home Depot, Red Lobster. While it was tempting to trade in those points for $300 worth of gen-u-ine Eye-talian meals at Olive Garden, I have made my final decision, and when the gift card arrives in the mail, I’ll be heading straight to the house wares department at Macy’s.

Okay, so this is where I need YOUR help. The array of available colors for the Kitchen Aid Artisan 5 Quart Stand Mixer are indeed vast. So vast that I am paralyzed with indecision.

Here is my quandary: Practical or whimsical? I could be conservative and classy and stick with basic black (although there are THREE different shades of black, if you can imagine).
My kitchen looks like this:kitchenblock.jpg kitchensink.jpg

The tiles, original features of my 1935-built home, are butter yellow and black. Naturally, then, black is the obvious choice; it is classy and neutral and, being that my mixer will likely be in my life longer than the house, it is the sensible choice. As for yellow, It has never been my favorite, but it IS a kitchen-y color and it is also the same color as my mother’s circa 1962 Sunbeam stand mixer responsible for all creaming of butter and sugar done by yours truly between the years of 1978 and 1988. So, yellow wins nostalgia points.

But look, here!

In my kitchen, as you can see in the above photo, there are highlights of red and even a bit of orange. Additionally (speaking of orange), get a load of my living room.livingroom.jpg Granted, it is unlikely that I’ll ever be kicking out a bowlful of meringue or mixing up a batch of these excellent ginger cookies in my living room, but still. The tangerine color could provide a sort of traveling continuity throughout my home.

Yes, I know, it’s only a mixer. Functionality and performance should be my priority, here. This, however, is not the issue because I am already secure in the knowledge that this Kitchen Aid is a superior and highly-regarded product. I am, however, planning to be looking at this machine/baking partner for the next few decades. I am giving this no more thought and consideration than I would were I to be choosing paint colors, tiles or upholstery for my sofa. In fact, the mixer will be more permanent than any of those things.

Okay, so to the point: I’m taking an opinion poll. I usually am pretty directed and decisive about matters of home aesthetics, but as I said, I’m feeling paralyzed.

If you have a minute or two to spare, please go to this link to view all available color choices and then indicate your vote in the comments section.

Thank you in advance for your time and support. If you’re in the neighborhood, let me know. My 325-watt-motored, ergonomically handled Kitchen Aid and I will whip you up a fresh batch of your favorite cookies.

And, of course, we will look quite fabulous in the process.
It’s all about accessorizing, you know.

http://www.cooking.com/products/shprodde.asp?SKU=201396 Check out this brushed copper model. I wonder if it tarnishes? But seriously, I’d go with white if you really want to be retro.

My own KSM-5 is a 75th anniversary model (circa 1994) in limited edition ‘diamond white’ (sparkles a little). It even came with an extra laser engraved bowl with my name on it and the 75th anniversary graphic. White matches everything and is really easy to see where it needs to be cleaned.

I went with the Pro 6 qt model because of the motor in it; I was told it was the only KA that really kneads well. So far, I love it. The copper 5 qt is very nice, too, though.

Brian: Copper, huh? Now you’ve opened a whole new can of worms. I can’t decide if I love it or not, but I am intrigued. However, it’s quite a bit more expensive ($200 more) than the model I’m looking at. I must say I’m a bit covetous of your monogrammed mixing bowl. That’s fancy, man.
You’re probably right about white, but white appliances always look dirty (or maybe I’m just a really lazy appliance-cleaner.) And how can I get white when there are ALL THOSE COLORS?

Forget matching. What color do you really love? My guess would be tangerine, from the living room. If that’s the case, get tangerine. As you say, this mixer will be with you for decades. Pick a color you love to look at.

Red. I say go with red. It’s festive. It pops. We have a boring old white one (but a 6qt pro model). I leave it locked in the pantry. If it were red or even copper or tangerine, I would proudly display in on the corner of my counter. But white. Not so much. Brian’s diamond white one sounds good. And an engraved bowl to boot sweetens the tea. Now I want to get another one. And, yes, I really like using mine. It makes great bread and cakes and potatoes. I like its big, heavy presence that says: The owner of this kitchen is a serious cook. Even though I am still learning. KAs are art forms in themselves.

Curt: That’s good to know, although I never bake bread, so I have need to knead, really. I make challah about once every 2 years, and I feel like I’d be cheating if I didn’t do it by hand. I don’t know why…

Jenny and Laura: Thanks for validating my color yearnings. I’m leaning towards the red, although green apple is suddenly a dark horse in the running. Am I insane? But then there’s the tangerine… oh gosh. I’m back where I began.

LAURA: I’m so glad you said that about the white because a bunch of folks are telling me to go white and it just seems like such a cop-out and a wasted opportunity for pizazz. And nobody needs LESS pizzazz in her life, right?

Even though colors are exciting, you may, after a couple of decades, tire of any color or want another color scheme. This is an appliance that will last forever and if you have to hide it away because it no longer looks good in your kitchen it will be harder to access when you are in your 50’s because this appliance is heavy. Or I guess you could get an amazing ‘appliance garage’. I vote for black, white or stainless.

I’m hooked on the classic white model (although some of the colors look tempting). But it’s like that lime green sweater you buy today…are you gonna love it in 2013?

OK, so you want some pizazz? You’ve probably seen Alton Brown’s flaming kitchenaid:

This green one with purple flames makes a statement too.

If you plan on doing a lot of bread baking, I don’t know if the the 325 packs enough of a punch.

Do you really knead more is I guess the question?

(However, who am I to talk, I’m still using a Sunbeam mixer whose white color has aged to an unattractive yellowish beige. Which reminds me, don’t forget to factor in the fade factor. Metal probably won’t fade too badly, but anything plastic might.)

Marsha: It’s a good point that you make about the color becoming dated, but I sort of feel like black and stainless can look dated. I guess that leaves white, but look at Laura’s comment about how she already stores her white Kitchenaid out of sight. I don’t think red is such a trendy color, like the avocado or mustard appliances, circa 1971.

David: White is both minimal and soothing as well as bleak and depressing. Therein lies the paradox/dilemma.

Brian: Holy smokes! That $h!t is so bad A$$! I had no idea. I’m getting one and taking it on a cross-country tour of bake-offs in my bitchin’ Camaro. Those are so good.

FJK: I have my grandma’s white Sunbeam stand mixer circa 1950-something. It actually works, even though it’s at it’s own leisurely pace. I don’t need to knead. I really never bake bread - only cakes, cookies, meringues, etc.

Thanks for all the imput!

I may be biased, but I personally like the Tangerine colored 5 t. Artisan Mixer. After moving out a few years ago, I inherited my mom’s old Sunbeam stand mixer. She had gotten it when she married my dad. After having just passed their 30th anniversary, it has had a long and useful life, but is showing a lot of wear. She purchased Kitchen Aid before I moved out. While other mixers “work”, the Kitchen Aid seems to do a better and quicker job of making things. Especially the heavy cheescake batters I am fond of.

Once I get a tuition reimbursement from work, a new Kitchen Aif mixer is on my list to buy.

No matter what you get you can’t go wrong. I have both a white Artisan (had it since 1988) and a red Pro. (http://culinaryfool.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!A7D1373D92F448FA!916.entry) Like some of the others have mentioned that big motor in the pro is wonderful. But like you, for years I used a little hand mixer and that first Artisan was a wonderful upgrade.

I really like the splash of color the red brings to the kitchen (however the pro is really tall - make sure it will fit under your cupboards if you are thinking of storing it on the countertop.)

If you are purchasing from Macy’s you may be limited by which mixer you choose and which colors they are carrying in stock, unless you plan to purchase online. So before you get too set on anything specific you may want to check your local stores.

Bleak and depressing? Girlfriend, everytime I look at my white KitchenAid, I get a rush of excitement (go ahead…try it). I have a chrome one too that I was using for a while, but went back to basic white.
KitchenAid used to offer a ‘Make Your Own Mixer’ program if you went to their factory, and you could choose your own color, but they’ve stopped that. Still, there is a company that make flame-decals that you can strap on your mixer to add more excitement to your baking.

I see a lot of people who already agree with my recommendation… the white. Its classic and looks great (plus you don’t notice when it is covered in flour :=)

Blacky, black, black. It’s classic, goes with most decors. I have the same color scheme in my kitchen, as well as being circa 1928,and black looks so nice with the yellow tile. I also have a black hand mixer and blender. It may take some getting used to. I’ve only had my for a month after baking for 12+ years in much the same manner as yourself. Happy baking!

i just received my kitchen aid mixer (color: glossy cinnamon) and now i’m looking around for recipes and what not and ran across this forum. Although i am a few months late to comment, i bought the 5 qt artisan, with a 325 motor, and just so people realize,it kneads bread constantly without a problem. My question is, WHAT COLOR DID YOU GO WITH?? and i hope you didn’t do what i did. Now that i have my mixer, and i love the color, i’m looking at redoing my kitchen to match the mixer.

Hey guys,
Man, I dropped the ball on that post. Somehow, I didn’t receive notice of those last few replies, until Dusty’s.

I REALLY appreciate all the feedback. And you’re right, there’s nothing depressing about white.

But, I went with red in the end. I’m not sorry. I especially love the way red looks with shiny chrome… quite pleasing. Most pleasing, though, is the fact that it makes meringue in two shakes of a lambs tail. How in the world did I get along all these years without the K.A.?
